Psalm 23

If ever there has been written more comforting words for the human condition it is Psalm 23. Maybe the greatest fear we face is being in need and want and David declared that it is God who is his shepherd. What does a shepherd do? He leads his flock to where they will flourish. And because David knows the nature of his God he declares boldly - I have everything I need.

Imagine for a moment that you're a grass feeding sheep. David declares that his Shepherd lets him rest in green meadows (pastures). Everything we need is all around us. Our rest is a place of trusting God to meet our needs and "fatten us up". Wow!

Keep imagining that you are a sheep. David declares that his Shepherd leads him beside peaceful streams. Not only do we have what we need and we can rest in our faith in God, but he also leads to the streams to meet our thirst. What a picture - never hungry - never thirsty. Always a place to rest and be at peace.

What a far cry from our daily lives of self provision.

Yet, God knows exactly where we live and still all around us is provision, rest, peace, and water that we may never be thirsty.

Glory be to the Good Shepherd!
